A few weeks ago there was an announcement about
the cancellation of the Zatanna movie which is a
shame. Zatanna could've been an interesting movie...if
done right. which got me thinking about how would they
do a Zatanna film. I came up with the idea of using the
trade paperback book JLA: Zatanna's Search. For those
who don't know...
"JLA: ZATANNA'S SEARCH is the collected volume of
the Silver Age saga that introduced Zatanna! The
teenage mage seeks help from the JLA to rescue her
father, Golden Age great Zatara, from certain doom.
Reprinted from THE ATOM #19, HAWKMAN #4, GREEN LANTERN #42, DETECTIVE COMICS #335 (it's really #336) and 355 and JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #51. Also, a 10-page Zatanna origin by Gerry Conway and Romeo Tanghal."
For obvious reasons instead of using the JLA, I figured Zatanna could recruit DC's mystical characters to avoid any complications and disputes. Here's my summary pitch for Zatanna film...
Movie Idea:
Zatanna
Giovanni "John" Zatara the famous stage magician has been missing for 13 years. An extra-dimensional
entity Allura appeared on Earth.
Zatara came into conflict with Allura
and, after a battle, he was able to
imprison her with a magical artifact
called the Sword of Paracelsus.
Before she faded from sight, however,
Allura placed a curse on Zatara,
proclaiming that any contact with his
kin would end in death. The curse
left Zatara unable to contact his
daughter "directly or even indirectly."
To save his daughter, Zatara left
Earth's dimension, seeking a way to break the curse. Years later,
Zatanna became a stage magician like her father, wearing a feminine version of her father's costume, and decided to begin a quest to search for her father. She meets John Constantine who volunteers to help find her legendary father. Zatanna discovers he's in the other-dimensional world of Kharma. With the help of the good Allura, the evil Allura was defeated and imprisoned once more. The curse was removed, allowing Zatara and his daughter to be reunited.
I have a keynote script written and a plot for a sequel. For those who care Zatanna is half Romani and Italian courtesy of Zatara. If this movie was being made 20 years ago I would've picked Vanessa Marcil. The only other actress who comes to mind is Carlotta Montanari.
